Split Privacy Policy
Last updated: 13 October 2026
This policy covers Split Expense ("Split"): the Android app, and the web app at split.rsaw409.me, which can be installed on iPhone, iPad and computers. It explains what Split stores, who can see it, and how to have it deleted.
The short version
- Split has no accounts. We never ask for your email, phone number or a password.
- What you enter in a group (its name, the names of its members, and its expenses and payments) is stored on our server so everyone in the group can see it.
- Anyone with a group's invite link can join it and see everything in it.
- We use OneSignal to send notifications about activity in your groups.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking across apps, and we never sell your data.
- Email developer.rohitsaw@gmail.com to have anything deleted.
Who we are
Split is built and run by Rohit Saw (rsaw409), an independent developer in West Bengal, India. "We" and "us" in this policy mean him. You can reach us at developer.rohitsaw@gmail.com.
What you put into Split
When you use Split, our server stores what you and the other members enter:
- Groups: the name, currency and icon.
- Members: the name typed for each person, and the code their cartoon avatar is drawn from. Avatars are generated, never photos.
- Expenses and payments: the title, the amount, who paid, how it was split or who was paid, and when it was recorded.
Member names are often other people's names, typed by whoever adds them. Only add people who are happy to be in the group, and use a nickname if they prefer.
Who can see your group
Everyone in a group can see everything in it: its members, every expense and payment, and everyone's balances. Anyone who has the group's invite link or invite code can join, so treat a group as shared with everyone you send its link to, and anyone they forward it to.
Because Split has no accounts or passwords, we can't guarantee that only a group's members can see its data. Don't record anything in Split you'd mind becoming public, such as card or bank details in an expense title.
Notifications
Split notifies the members of a group when something happens in it, such as a new expense or payment. To do that:
- The app gets an ID for your device from OneSignal, our notification provider, and sends it to our server with the list of groups on your device. That's how we know which devices to notify about which group. The list is updated each time you open the app, so leaving a group stops its notifications.
- Each notification's text passes through OneSignal. It can include the group's name, an expense's title, a payment's amount, or a member's old and new name.
- OneSignal's software in the app also collects technical details about your device, such as its model, operating system, language, time zone, app version and IP address, and records when the app is opened and when a notification is tapped. OneSignal handles these under its own privacy policy.
- Notifications are delivered by a push service: Google's for the Android app, and your browser's for the web app (for example Google's for Chrome, Apple's for Safari and on iPhone and iPad, Mozilla's for Firefox and Microsoft's for Edge).
You can turn notifications off at any time in your device's or browser's settings. The web app only offers notifications once it has been installed, never in a browser tab.
When you install from an invite link
On Android, if you install Split from Google Play by following an invite link, Google Play passes the link's invite code to the app. The app reads it once, the first time it opens, so it can join you to that group. It contains nothing but the invite code.
What stays on your device
- The app saves your groups, a copy of their expenses and balances (so they show offline), and your settings, such as the theme. This stays on your device and is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its data.
- Member statements are made as PDFs on your device. They are only shared where you choose to send them.
- The app only reads your clipboard when you tap Paste on the Join group screen.
Technical information
- Our server logs each request's type, result and how long it took, and any errors, to keep the service working. It does not log your IP address or the content you send.
- To stop any one address overloading the service, our server holds IP addresses in memory for up to 10 minutes. They aren't saved anywhere.
- Our hosting provider sees your IP address when your device connects, as every web host does.
- The web app loads its rendering engine and fonts from Google (gstatic.com), so Google sees your IP address when they load.
What we don't do
- No ads, and no advertising IDs.
- No analytics or crash-reporting tools, and no tracking across apps and websites. OneSignal's record of app opens and notification taps is the only usage information collected.
- No access to your location, contacts, camera, photos or files.
- We never sell or rent your data, or share it with anyone except the providers below, who use it only to run Split.
Service providers
- Supabase Hosts our database, in Mumbai, India. Privacy policy
- Render Hosts our server and the web app. Privacy policy
- OneSignal Sends notifications. Privacy policy
- Google Google Play (installs and invite codes), notification delivery on Android and in Chrome, and the web app's engine and fonts. Privacy policy
- Apple Notification delivery for the web app on iPhone, iPad and in Safari. Privacy policy
Some of these providers process data outside India, including in the United States.
We may also disclose data if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Group data (members, expenses and payments) is kept until you ask us to delete it. Leaving a group only removes it from your device: the group is shared, so its data stays for the other members.
- Your device's notification ID stays linked to your groups until the app updates the list, or you ask us to remove it.
- Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for a limited time, then deleted.
Changing or deleting your data
In the app you can rename members, change their avatars, and edit a group's name, currency and icon. Expenses and payments can't be edited or deleted in the app.
To have a group, a member, an expense or a payment deleted, or to ask what we hold, email developer.rohitsaw@gmail.com with the group's invite link and what you'd like done. We may ask you to show you're in the group, and we'll reply within 30 days.
Security
Everything Split sends goes over encrypted connections (HTTPS). As explained above, group data isn't protected by accounts or passwords, so please keep sensitive information out of Split.
Children
Split isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has used Split, email us and we'll delete what they entered.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update it on this page and change the date at the top.
